Gurgaon to Nainital Distance

Gurgaon to Nainital Distance

If you’re one of us living in Gurgaon and craving a fresh mountain breeze, then Nainital’s probably the first (and only) hill station that jumps into mind. It’s the kind of place that’s close enough for a quick weekend break but still far enough to give you a much-needed break from city life. People are always looking for the lowdown on just how far it is, what kind of roads you’ll be driving on and the best route to take – trust me I’ve been there, I’ve done the trip and through this guide I’ll give you the lowdown so you can plan your trip with ease.

Gurgaon to Nainital Road Trip – the Basics

So how far is Nainital from Gurgaon? Well, that all depends on the route you take but the average is anywhere between 330 to 350 km. Most of us end up taking around 8-10 hours to get there by car if we leave early. Of course, that can all go out the window if you hit traffic in Delhi NCR or get held up at the toll plazas in Ghaziabad or Moradabad. But then that’s all part of the fun right? Getting to Nainital is all about the journey, and once you hit the hills – the long winding roads, the change of scenery – it’s an absolute treat.

Or – if you don’t fancy driving, don’t worry there are plenty of other options – buses, trains, flights – all with their own unique style and budget. Whether it’s just you, or you’re off on an adventure with friends or family, this route has something for everyone.

Gurgaon to Nainital Distance

Route 1: Gurgaon – Moradabad – Haldwani – Nainital

This is probably the most popular route for a reason – it’s a great balance of driving time and scenery. It’s about 330 km and takes around 9 hours with a few short stops. You start off on NH9, then pass through Ghaziabad, Hapur and Moradabad, before things start to get a little more relaxed. Once you get to Haldwani the hills start and from there it’s just a short 40 km to Nainital. Road conditions are pretty good, apart from the last bit which gets a bit hairy. If you can, it’s always best to leave early to avoid morning traffic.

Loads of people stop off at Garhmukteshwar for breakfast near the Ganga bridge. It’s a lovely spot to watch the sunrise and sets a great tone for the rest of the day.

Route 2: Gurgaon – Ghaziabad – Rampur – Nainital

This route is a bit longer and takes you through a few smaller towns, it’s less crowded but it’s also a bit slower because of the road conditions. If you fancy a more relaxed drive and don’t mind taking a few detours then this one’s a good option. There are loads of small markets and tea stalls along the way and you get to see some lovely countryside views – sugarcane fields and all that.

But if you do choose this route, make sure you fill up on fuel before you get to Rampur because the petrol pumps thin out a bit after that.

Route 3: Gurgaon – Delhi – Bareilly – Nainital

This one’s good for people who want to break up the journey with a quick stop in Bareilly or at one of the local temples – it’s a good option if you want to combine your trip with a bit of sightseeing. It’s not the quickest way but it’s smooth sailing all the way and the roads are well-maintained. Once you hit Kathgodam though the terrain changes and you start climbing up into the hills – and before you know it you’re greeted with the fresh mountain air of Nainital.

Travel Options from Gurgaon to Nainital

By Car – Self-drive or Cab

Driving gives you total freedom. You can stop for chai, stretch your legs or take detours whenever you want. A small car will cost you around ₹2,500–₹3,000 one way in fuel. Add tolls of around ₹600–₹700. Hiring a cab will cost you around ₹8,000–₹10,000 for a round trip.

If you like driving, leave Gurgaon by 5 am to beat the NCR traffic. Avoid night driving in hilly areas as fog and curves can reduce visibility. When in doubt, slow down.

By Bus

Several government and private buses run between Delhi and Nainital daily. You can board from ISBT Anand Vihar, about an hour from Gurgaon. Options include Volvo, AC seater and sleeper coaches. Prices range from ₹800 to ₹1,200.

The journey takes 9 to 10 hours depending on the route and weather. Most buses stop at Haldwani or Kathgodam from where you can hire taxis or shared jeeps to Nainital.

Booking online ensures you get better seats and avoid last minute hassle. Travelling by bus is good for solo or budget travellers who don’t want to drive.

By Train

There’s no direct train from Gurgaon to Nainital. The nearest railway station is Kathgodam which connects to Delhi and Ghaziabad. You can catch trains like Ranikhet Express or Shatabdi from Delhi. Travel time is about 6 to 7 hours.

From Kathgodam, Nainital is just 35 km away. Shared cabs and private taxis wait outside the station. The hilly drive from Kathgodam to Nainital takes about an hour and is scenic.

Train journey is good if you prefer comfort and want to avoid long road hours.

By Air

The nearest airport to Nainital is Pantnagar, about 70 km away. Flights from Delhi to Pantnagar take about an hour. After landing you can hire a taxi to Nainital which will cost around ₹1,500–₹2,000.

Flying saves time but costs more. It’s good for families with kids or older travellers. But flight schedules to Pantnagar are limited so plan ahead.

Scenic Stops and Places to Visit En Route

The road from Gurgaon to Nainital has several interesting halts.

Garhmukteshwar is on the banks of Ganga River and is good for a short spiritual break. Gajraula is a food stop, famous for its dhabas serving parathas and chai. If you want to stretch the trip, Jim Corbett National Park is just a small detour from Haldwani. You can even plan a day there for safari and wildlife views.

Closer to Nainital, Bhimtal and Sattal lakes add to the calm and beauty before you reach the main town.

Best Time to Travel from Gurgaon to Nainital

The best time to travel depends on what you’re after – sightseeing, adventure, or just a chill getaway.

  • Summer (March to June): Perfect for taking a leisurely boat ride, enjoying the views, and warm sunshine.
  • Monsoon (July to September): Its lush green hills can be breathtaking – but be aware that landslides can bring roadblocks.
  • Winter (October to February): Get ready for chilly mornings, snuggling up by the fire in the evenings, and maybe even a dusting of snow.

I happened to visit in March & the weather was perfect – not too cold but still warm enough to wear light jackets without overheating in the sun. The drive was a breeze & the hills were bursting with colorful flowers.

Definitely avoid driving in heavy monsoon rain – public transport is a much safer bet then.

Tips for a Stress Free Trip

Pack light, but don’t neglect some essentials like a jacket, some essential meds & some snacks. Hill roads can play havoc with some people’s stomachs, so a good idea is to pick up some motion sickness tablets beforehand. Also, keep some cash handy for tolls & fuel, as digital payment networks can be a bit patchy in the hills.

Plan your fuel stops before Moradabad & again at Haldwani – & make sure you have at least half a tank of fuel before you start climbing. Phone signal can also get a bit dodgey after Bhimtal.

If you’re planning a trip over a holiday period, it’s well worth making a booking for your accommodation early – popular places tend to fill up quickly. If you need some recomendations for trusted places to stay near the main attractions, then Sapient Realty can give you some advice.

A Rough Idea of What to Budget For

A weekend road trip for two people typically comes in around ₹7,000-₹9,000 including fuel, food & accomodation. Budget hotels in Nainital usually start at around ₹2,000 per night. Resort prices tend to range from ₹4,000 to ₹6,000 a night.

Adding some sightseeing, boating & shopping to the mix, a 3-day trip could easily cost anywhere between ₹10,000 & ₹15,000. Plus, if you’re travelling with a group you can often negotiate a better price.

Try eating at local eateries instead of fancy restaurants, & give some of the local Kumaoni dishes a try – bhatt ki churkani & gahat dal are some of the best.

What Nainital Has in Store for You

When you finally arrive, you’ll be glad you made the effort – Nainital’s pretty lake, cool mountain air & stunning scenery are just the thing to clear your head & put some space between you and the chaos of Gurgaon. Take some time to walk along Mall Road & browse the local shops, try out some boating on Naini Lake, & head up to Tiffin Top for an amazing view. Make sure you also visit Naina Devi Temple by the lake.

The local market is a great place to pick up some woollens & handmade candles to bring back as a souvenir. Trust me, even a weekend here can feel like a proper break from the noise & the hustle.
